SEO as applied practice — pointed at the commercial keywords that carry acquisition weight.
Twelve years of applied SEO discipline directed at competitive commercial keyword rankings across professional service industries and revenue-producing verticals. Top Google positions held year over year, for search terms where a single click prices in the tens or hundreds of dollars, and where qualified leads are worth 5-7 figures.
The discipline underneath the deliverables.
Commercial keyword visibility at scale is not a deliverables problem. Content, links, audits — the standard inventory shows up in every proposal. What determines whether the rankings actually materialize is the applied SEO discipline underneath: which positions are winnable in a given keyword surface, in what sequence they get built, what architecture holds them, and how the whole structure survives the algorithm shifts that reset shallower work.
The difference between deliverables SEO and applied SEO practice is visible in what happens to rankings in month six, nine, and twelve, not in month one. Established professionals who have been through multiple SEO engagements usually recognize this pattern — Everyone has the ingredients but generic SEO recipes don’t work.
The math behind held ranking positions.
Ranking positions determines traffic share. The top three organic positions capture the large majority of clicks. Traffic share multiplied by conversion rate yields engagements. Engagements multiplied by lifetime customer value are what the ranking positions are worth.
Applied to a niche where PPC clicks price at tens to hundreds of dollars and a client’s lifetime value runs into five or six figures, a held top-three organic position, multiplied times many keywords functions as a durable qualified lead generation system built to withstand algorithm shifts rather than gain temporary ranking positions from questionable tactics that get caught in the next algorithm update.
What the engagement covers.
- Keyword research mapped to commercial intent and search behavior — not aggregate volume.
- Technical audit and remediation of the site infrastructure the ranking positions depend on.
- On-page SEO architecture across the pages competing for the target keyword surface.
- Content strategy and production built against the ranking keyword map.
- Link acquisition at the quality tier the competitive keyword niche requires.
- Weekly ranking reports; monthly review against the engagement plan.
What sits outside scope.
- Paid media management. A separate discipline. Applied SEO practice addresses organic ranking positions, not paid channels.
- Landing-page conversion optimization. Outside scope except where directly ancillary to ranking page performance.
- Reputation and AEO work. Adjacent disciplines with their own service pages.
How the engagement runs.
Every SEO engagement opens with a project phase: keyword research and mapping to commercial intent, technical audit against the ranking infrastructure, on-page architecture built into the pages that compete, initial content and link work — defined scope, defined timeline. Maintenance follows month-to-month.
Weekly ranking reports capture positions held across the target keyword map, movement during the week, and work completed. Quarterly review examines the full arc against the original ranking targets. Month-to-month terms — the engagement continues because the ranking positions achieved and held, so you have the flexibility every month to make a fresh decision to continue or not.
Adjacent disciplines.
SEO brings prospects to the door on commercial keyword searches. If what they encounter when they subsequently search your name carries reputation damage, new prospects can see the negative content and decide not to inquire or move forward at all — that is online reputation management. If prospects research through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or other AI-mediated search before they ever reach Google, that is answer engine optimization.
Questions professionals ask about SEO engagements.
How long does SEO take to show results?
It depends on the target keywords, the starting ranking position of those keywords and many other factors. This is whats revealed in an inital discovery call. But in general 6-12 months is an industry standard guideline. Established sites with many ‘low hanging fruit’ keywords ranking on the bottom of Page 1 or top of Page 2 can see results faster if strategized for intentionally.
What happens to SEO rankings during Google algorithm updates?
Rankings can, and often do, fluctuate during updates. What separates whether or not SEO work absorbs the algorithm volatility and comes out stronger or not is the foundational work thats built and maintained in the beginning of the project, consistent information gain content is published frequently, and authoritative third party sites mention you, reference you and/or link to you often. Shallow work gets destroyed by algorithm updates. Year-over-year held positions across multiple algorithm cycles are why I’ve been able to practice SEO for over a decade.
Is the SEO methodology white-hat?
Applied SEO practice builds real properties, produces real content, and earns real authority. Nothing in the methodology depends on tactical loopholes that an algorithm change closes. The work compounds across the years because it operates within webmaster guideline ranking mechanics rather than against them.
Why month-to-month engagements instead of long contracts?
Because renewal decisions belong to the client at every month — earned fresh each month, not enforced by a contract term. Long-running engagements have continued for many consecutive years on exactly those terms.
